After a long summer, your furnace might need extra attention before battling the cooler air of the fall and winter. While some homeowners put maintenance off until it’s too late, you should start thinking about getting your equipment ready now! See below to find out what you can do to make sure your furnace is ready for fall:
Before performing any maintenance, cut the power and fuel supply. There should be an on-off switch on the unit itself and you’ll need to find the fuel shutoff valve whether it’s near the tank or on the gas pipe.
Next, you’ll want to make sure the equipment is clean. Remove the door to the combustion chamber and vacuum out the inside. Then move to the blower compartment and vacuum it out as well. When you’re finished cleaning out any dirt or dust, check for holes and cover them with foil tape.
Now is a great time to clean or replace the air filter. Keep in mind that most of the air your family will be breathing in the upcoming months will pass through here, so it’s vital to make sure it’s clean. If you have an oil-fired furnace, remember to clean or replace the oil filter as well.
