Have a leaky or running toilet that's driving you crazy? Believe it or not, it's usually a simple fix. The hardest part is understanding and identifying the parts that may need some adjusting. Follow the guide below to get your toilet back in working condition - without the annoying sound of constant running water.
Ball Cock
If your toilet is running intermittently, there may be a problem with the ball cock. This is the on/off valve regulated by the float ball, which fills the tank as well as the bowl after each flush. A damaged ball cock could be the cause of a runny toilet and should be replaced.
Float Ball
In a properly working toilet tank, the float ball is the device that shuts off the ball cock when the water reaches the proper level after flushing. If the float ball isn't working properly, it can allow for the water to fill too high and overflow.
The Chain
This is among the most common causes of a runny toilet. The chain opens the flapper at the beginning of a flush and is supposed to allow the flapper to settle over the hole at the end of a flush to stop the water from running. If the chain is too short or too long, it can prevent the flapper from closing properly which will allow the water to continue to run.
Overflow Tube
If any of the above parts aren't working correctly, the next line of defense is the overflow tube. This piece prevents the tank from overflowing and causing a mess in your bathroom. If tank water is running constantly, try bending the arm of the float ball or lower the float cup when replacing the fill-valve. Still needing help with your toilet?
