How Much Money Can I Save with Energy Star LED Bulbs?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy's ENERGY STAR® website, ENERGY STAR certified light bulbs use 70-90% less energy than older design incandescent bulbs.

While CFL and LED bulbs are still comparatively expensive, just one 12-watt ENERGY STAR LED bulb will last as long as 25 43-watt incandescent bulbs – a savings of $65 on your electric bill over the life of the bulb... not to mention the time savings in not having to replace 25 light bulbs! CFL bulbs cost less, but will last 10-25 times longer, saving you $30 to $80 in energy costs over the lifetime of the bulb and will need to be replaced 2.5 times more often as a LED bulb with similar wattage.

These savings figures are based on 25,000 hour LED time; 10,000 hour CFL lifetime and 1,000 hour incandescent lifetime electric rate of $0.08 per kWh; and an LED price of $10, a CFL price of $3 and an incandescent price of $0.40.
