But before you get your hands dirty, it’s important to know the difference between myths and what works when it comes to your home’s plumbing system.

Myth: Putting a brick in the back of your toilet tank will help you save water. 

Fact: This is far from the truth. Putting a brick in your toilet tank can break the flapper and it can also cause too much water to displace. That means you’ll need to flush again. 

Myth: Lemon peels in the garbage disposal will make it smell better. 

Fact: While it is true that lemon peels can make it smell nice, they will most likely clog the drain. Instead, try pouring a bit of white vinegar down the drain to freshen it up. 

Myth: Flushable wipes are safe for your septic system. 

Fact: Even though it may say that some wipes are “flushable” on the package, they will not break down like toilet paper and are notorious for causing clogs. Stick to flushing toilet paper and if you need to use a wipe, throw it in the trash instead. 

Myth: Toilet tablets containing bleach will help keep your toilet clean. 

Fact: Pouring a bit of bleach in the bowl is okay, but don’t let a tablet with bleach sit in the tank. Why? It can destroy important working pieces and cause serious plumbing problems.
