The ABC's of Plumbing - Pressure Booster Pump

Posted August 2, 2016

Do you have low water pressure throughout your home? Because there can be many causes for low water pressure, first consult a plumber to identify the specific cause. If nothing else works, you may need to install a water pressure booster at the water meter.

A pressure booster is usually only needed when the municipal water supply can’t deliver enough pressure. The booster works by taking the water entering from the street water main and increasing the pressure with an electric pump and a pressure tank.

A dial on top of the pump adjusts the pressure. A safe setting is usually between 45 to 55 psi. The tank is designed to contain pressurized water so that the pump doesn’t have to cycle every time water is used. When demand for water is high, the tank helps to boost flow when the demand for water is high (like when multiple showers are in use).
